Michael's Angels - YOU Carrying on His Legacy!
July 22, 2010 [Updated June 2012]
Welcome to the new Michael's Angels section! To see the information from the original launch of Michael's Angels, including our first contest and the first set of members' stories, please click here.
The Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait has an opportunity, with members worldwide and celebrity support, to really make a difference - to really carry on Michael's legacy. Through you, our MJTP family, The Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait project in its entirety can consistently work to make sure we, as some of his true "soldiers of love," carry on his legacy, to continue to focus on love as our message, with love as our mission. We can share and express Michael's message of love through taking action to help change the world in Michael’s name. We are Michael's Angels.
Michael Jackson wasn’t just the greatest entertainer in the world; he was also a great humanitarian. Passionate about healing the world and making it a better place, he truly understood the concept of giving back and that should never be forgotten. He gave hundreds of millions of dollars to charities and used his global fame as a force for humanitarian causes around the world.
Who can forget the time when he suffered second degree burns on his scalp when a pyrotechnics accident set his hair on fire while filming a Pepsi commercial? Yet he turned that into an opportunity to help others. He sued PepsiCo and settled out of court for $1.5 million, then selflessly donated that money to the Brotman Medical Center where he had received treatment for his burns. With the money he donated, they were able to get the best technology available for treating burn victims. They later honored Michael and his generosity by naming the burn center after him.
He was most sensitive to the pain and suffering of children. He visited orphanages and hospitals all over the world whenever he was touring and helped many of them improve their facilities. However, the best gift he gave was his time and love. In 1988 he visited terminally ill children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where he gave them his undivided attention by spending a little extra time with them so he could tell them a story.
Now, we would like to inspire YOU to carry on Michael's work of making the world a better place. Share your story of what you did to volunteer and we will honor you with a Special Badge for your profile page that identifies you as one of Michael’s Angels who is carrying on his legacy. [Please see the below June 2012 udpate.]
What you can do:
Spend some time volunteering in your community, whether for a day or on an ongoing basis. Choose something that is near and dear to you. We especially want to encourage you to get involved in the causes that were close to Michael’s heart. If you love children, as Michael did, select an organization that is dedicated to helping children. If you love animals, see if you can volunteer with the local humane society for a day. Michael was concerned about the planet, so if this is an area of interest to you, maybe you could volunteer at a local park, helping to pick up trash or set up a recycling day in your neighborhood. Get creative!
To let us know what YOU'RE doing to carry on Michael's legacy, submit the story of your experience being one of Michael’s Angels via the Comment Box below. Submissions should include a brief explanation about the volunteer work you did, your dot number, and when possible, a photo and/or a link to a video of you volunteering. (See below for instructions on how to include a photo in your post.) You are also welcome to provide a link to an organization’s website if you wish.
*We will also be featuring some different stories, causes, or events which have really caught our attention. We will post new articles, and if you decide to also take action on that cause, please let us know what you've done to help in that particular cause by posting a comment on that article. Please see below for additional articles on causes in the spotlight!
Everyone who participates will receive a “Michael’s Angels Badge” on their profile page. The badges (one per member) will be assigned after reviewing the submission. [Please see the below June 2012 update.]
Instructions on uploading a photo:
To add a photo to your submission, you will need to copy the HTML code from a photo sharing site you are using. For example, we have uploaded a photo of Michael on Photobucket (http://photobucket.com). They provide the HTML code next to the picture. Most photo sharing sites will work the same. Just make sure your picture is sized appropriately before uploading it to the site.
An example of what the code would look like, which you'd post into your comment would be:

***UPDATE: June 2012 – Our current Michael’s Angels badges, the first of which has been active for more than 2 and a half years, will be retired at the end of this month (badges assigned to members will remain on their profiles). While the badges are being retired, the efforts to carry on Michael Jackson’s humanitarian legacy will not! We encourage you to continue to support the charities, programs and initiatives we’ve highlighted so far in our Michael’s Angels program. We encourage you to keep volunteering and supporting charities that speak to your heart. Keep helping others; keep protecting the planet; keep doing what you do to make the world a better place and being an example to others, encouraging them to help heal the world.
