Wrapped In L.O.V.E.: Sending Our LOVE to the Jackson Family

One of the greatest things about being involved in the activities of the Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait (MJTP) family is seeing the choreography of the people from over 180 countries working together for a common purpose.   I have recently witnessed this beautiful dance of the nations in a project we have lovingly named “Wrapped in L.O.V.E.,” which was an idea I suggested to the MJTP Tribute Team shortly after the 2009/2010 winter holiday season to create a special gift for Michael’s mother and children.

I was feeling sad over the holidays, still thinking about Michael and his family, knowing how all of us at the MJTP website were feeling overwhelmingly heartbroken over Michael’s untimely passing and wondering how his family was dealing with the shock.  I wanted to turn our sadness into a positive and meaningful project—a way we could show our love and support to Michael’s family.  Since Katherine was the chosen guardian of Michael’s children, I began thinking about what we could do as a group to let Michael’s mother and children know that we were thinking of them and praying for them.  It was in my heart to send them a giant hug, but how?  Suddenly, an idea sparked!  The feeling of a hug is a lot like being wrapped up snugly in a cozy quilt.  What if Michael’s fans could get together and send what I call a “world hug” to Katherine, Prince, Paris, and Blanket?  A way of symbolizing a hug was to have beautiful handmade patchwork quilts made for each of them with special personalization from the fans across the world.  The Wrapped in LOVE patchwork quilt project was born!

In order to create these quilts, each fan who wanted to participate donated a patch to have sewn into a quilt of their choice for Katherine, Prince, Paris, or Blanket.  They were invited to donate patches in up to all four quilts, but limited to one patch per quilt.  Each patch that was donated would have that fan’s name exquisitely hand painted onto their patch.  In addition to the quilts, a registry book would accompany this gift to each person receiving a quilt.  Inside each registry book the names, MJTP “dot” numbers and usernames, and country of residence for each fan who donated patches was beautifully inscribed in calligraphy so Michael’s mother and children would know the names of every individual who donated patches to create their quilt, and the place in the world where they are from.  The participants in this project also had the unique privilege of sending in their own hand written cards and letters to each member of the Jackson family who they have donated a patch for delivered with the quilts.

When the idea was presented to the Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait members, they loved it and did not hesitate in getting started.  Donations of patches quickly began pouring in from all over the world.  It was our great fortune to have found two special earth angels, Lindsay (from the USA) and Iris (from Germany) who are both "dot members" here, and were generous enough to donate countless hours of their time and sewing talent from January to June 2010, as well as  the materials needed to complete the four amazing quilts.  These gifts were lovingly sewn together, and delivered to the Tribute Team in LA during the week of the first anniversary of Michael’s passing.  As I am sure you can imagine, the Jackson family was being pulled in every direction the week of June 25, 2010, the first anniversary week of Michael's passing, due to all of the tribute activity.  We are currently awaiting an appropriate time to present these beautiful gifts to them at a time when they can enjoy receiving them.  With our sensitivity to their needs, the quilts will be presented to Katherine, Prince, Paris, and Blanket Jackson at their earliest convenience.  It is our most sincere hope that when Michael’s family receives our gifts of love, they will feel a sense of peace and healing in their hearts.

Our gift represents Michael’s dream of the beauty of what is possible if all people of the world would make an effort to get together in the spirit of love, respect, and kindness to “make the world a better place” for those who are feeling sad and in need of love and support.  The members of the MJTP continue to seek opportunities to work together hand in hand, side by side, unified as one in continuing Michael’s legacy of exceptional humanitarian work. We believe with all our hearts that we CAN make a positive difference in the world, and all it takes is love and cooperation.  To the fans who have participated in making the dream of the Wrapped in LOVE project a reality, thank you from the bottom of my heart!  This gift to Michael’s family is simply our extension of all of the love, kindness, and extreme generosity we have received from Michael over his lifetime returned back to some of the people who meant the most to him.
