The Future of Michael Jackson's Legacy
"Together, let us create a symphony of hearts, marveling at the miracle of our children and basking in the beauty of love." – Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson touched the hearts of people from all walks of life, from all countries, all races and all ages. Some of those he has touched the most are the ones we refer to on the MJTP as the New Generation of MJ fans; those of you who are 17 years of age and under.
He has inspired you, taught you valuable lessons about life and love, and in some cases changed your life. Many of you feel a special connection to Michael, and you should, because he lived for the children of the world.
A story he told at Oxford University in 2001 really demonstrates how dedicated he was to his young fans:
"About twelve years ago, when I was just about to start my Bad tour, a little boy came with his parents to visit me at home in California. He was dying of cancer and he told me how much he loved my music and me. His parents told me that he wasn't going to live, that any day he could just go, and I said to him: "Look, I am going to be coming to your town in Kansas to open my tour in three months. I want you to come to the show. I am going to give you this jacket that I wore in one of my videos." His eyes lit up and he said: "You are gonna GIVE it to me?" I said "Yeah, but you have to promise that you will wear it to the show." I was trying to make him hold on. I said: "When you come to the show I want to see you in this jacket and in this glove" and I gave him one of my rhinestone gloves - and I never usually give the rhinestone gloves away, and he was just in heaven. But maybe he was too close to heaven, because when I came to his town, he had already died, and they had buried him in the glove and jacket. He was just 10 years old. God knows, I know, that he tried his best to hold on. But at least when he died, he knew that he was loved, not only by his parents, but even by me, a near stranger, I also loved him."
That is how much Michael Jackson loved his younger fans. He believed in you; he related to you; and he cared deeply about your well being. You held a special place in his heart, and as a result, he has touched many of you deeply.
When someone affects you at that level, it’s necessary to be able to express your feelings about it. That requires being part of a strong community of friends who know exactly how you feel. Whether you want to express those feelings through poetry, artwork, or simply conversing with friends that you can relate to, that is what the New Generation initiative is all about.
Heather, the Director of New Generation Outreach, was a perfect choice to head this special initiative. Like Michael, she also has a special place in her heart for children. She is someone who strongly believes that children are our future and she has dedicated her life to them. She does volunteer work with adolescents and has a certificate in teaching.
In her MJTP profile, she talks about how Michael used to always hold up signs for his fans that said things about the children. Remember the Children or Take Care of the Children are words that have been "written on my heart," she said. Heather has a passion for the new generation of MJ fans. She wants to ensure that you have a voice on this Tribute, so please feel free to reach out to her.
You, The New Generation of MJ fans, play a very important part in carrying on Michael Jackson's legacy. You are the future of his legacy; the ones who must keep his memory, his music and his message of L.O.V.E. alive. You are the ones who will help future generations see why he was…is…and always will be The King of Pop!
Michael may have inspired you, but in truth, it was really you that inspired him.
Keep his legacy alive!
Lots of L.O.V.E.
