Having Trouble with Your Comments Section, or Some Other Function on Your Profile?

April 12, 2011 [Updated May 3, 2011]

We've been hearing that some members have been having trouble viewing or posting comments recently, possibly around the same time we updated our home page.  Please note that we made no changes that would affect anyone's profile, and we made no programming changes, other than to change the appearance of the main home page and the user home page (“What's New”).  No features were added or removed.

In working with some members, we tested their profiles using several computers, several browsers/browser versions, and two operating systems.  We were able to view the comments and other profile areas reported without any trouble.  In further helping to troubleshoot, we found that the members may have updated their computers (manually or through automatic updates) which could have affected how they see things on the site.

If you're having this same sort of trouble, there are a few things you can do to fix it:

  • Check your browser settings, especially if you updated your browser.
  • Make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser, and that you have the most recent version of Java.
  • Contact the maker of your browser for help if needed. [Please see important update below!]
  • Once you fix your browser settings, clear your browser's cache and cookies, then reload/refresh the page (you may need to log in again, or even reboot your machine).
  • You can also try a different browser.  Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox all work very well with our site.  IE 8 seems to works as well, though some information (on our site and many other sites) might not be easily seen, if at all, using some (especially older) versions of Internet Explorer, as sometimes information gets cut off.  When we built our site, and when we update it, we test using at least three completely different browsers, including IE (and a browser on a MAC computer).
  • If your computer was recently updated with automatic updates, find out which updates were applied, then go to your operating system's website (such as Microsoft) to learn about them and see if there is information (such as caveats or reported trouble and how to fix) that may help you to do what is needed.

It is also important to note that profiles which have either a lot of comments (example, over 1,000) or comments left with many pictures with links to other sites, moving pictures ("gifs"), etc. may take a few seconds to load (depending on your Internet connection speed), as your profile has to connect to each of those linked pictures (and therefore websites) in order to be able to display them all for you.  Please just be patient and give it time to load so you can enjoy what your friends shared with you.

UPDATED MAY 3, 2011: Microsoft posted a bulletin on April 13, 2011, regarding some incompatibiilties that the new Internet Explorer 9 has with some versions of JavaScript frameworks.  We will be working with our tech support to try to make sure our pages are compatible with Microsoft's new browser changes, although as with all new software, there are often a few bugs to start with, and the software provider (such as Microsoft) works to correct the problem with more updates to get it working correctly.  In the meantime, you may need to try a different browser; either rolback to IE8, or try Google Chrome (the latest version still works with our site!), Mozilla Firefox or Safari.

For Windows 7 users (this option may work for other Windows users as well), to uninstall IE9 and rollback to IE8: Go to Control Panel> Programs and features> View installed updates. Find Windows Internet Explorer 9 in the list and uninstall it. [Be sure to reboot/restart your computer for the change to take effect. You should see Internet Explorer 8 was restored.]

If you do not see IE8 upon reboot, you may need to reinstall IE8: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8
